Importance of Recognition (surfing) Awards in an Organisation

In any organisation, however big or small, employee recognition is most probably one of the most controversial subjects. Whatever time of the year it is, employees always feel that they are overworked and undervalued and often crave for recognition and appreciation.

On the other hand, however big the company is the employers feel that the employees just do their job and there’s no need for a special recognition.

This difference in ideas creates an environment that is thick with low motivation levels, tensions, frustration, high expectation and the most dreaded by an organization- low performance level! The need for recognition is a deeply embedded one in employees. Therefore, recognition awards are important.

It is observed that the companies that recognize the importance and contribution of employees have higher productivity levels and generates an enthusiastic working environment. These organizations understand and recognize that excellent performance by employees is actually a great personal achievement for them, and recognizing it openly creates a motivating environment for the whole team. An organization needs to understand that recognition awards are more about motivating the entire team than just rewarding an individual.

When an organization recognizes and appreciates a desirable behaviour and performance by an employee, they reinforce the desire and expectation of repetition of this kind of behaviour from other employees too. In addition, the company also earns a lot of goodwill and respect among the employees.

Employees understand that by repeating the same appreciated actions and by producing the same desired results, their efforts and contributions will also be recognized and rewarded.

However, for this kind of recognition to bear positive and effective results, an organization needs to follow certain guidelines. Otherwise, the idea can backfire and it can tend to be trapped in the danger of becoming partisan, and randomly or plainly useless.

- Remember that every employee who fits the norm is eligible for praise. Do not fall prey to personal favours or prejudices.

- Recognition is useless if the rewarded employee(s) does not exactly know for what behaviour or performance he or she is being rewarded for. Therefore, as importance it is to reward a deserving employee, it is equally important to effectively communicate the reason and purpose behind the award.

- Another key is timing. Recognition should always be timely. It should occur at a fixed time like annual appraisals or monthly and if there is a delay, one should try to keep it as close to a particular event as possible.

- The ground rules or basic qualifications for the reward must be spelled out in advance to the employees and one should strive for complete transparency in the process of choosing the deserving employee(s).

Employee recognition can be expressed in various ways. Some companies swear by handing out bonuses, but many believe in handing out trophies, medals or awards publicly along with a small gift of appreciation, matching the personality of the recipient.

So, choose the best way according to your company policies and see the difference in your employees performances!
