Opinion Sports –The retired American basketball athlete, coach, author, and actor, Kareen Abdul-Jabbar, is currently being treated for an unnusual classification of leukemia. The former NBA player popular for his “skyhook” was diagnosed with severe myeloid leukemia last December stated by the Associated Press report.
Currently, Abdul-Jabbar is serving as a paid spokesman for Novartis, a pharmaceutical company from Swiss, the manufacturer of a medicine that treats the illness. The 62-year-old man said that he wants to give essential information about the disease to the world to help people and help save lives.
At the moment, Abdul-Jabar remained working as a special assistant for the Lakers. He stated that he does not need to lessen his level of activity of training. To make his statement more direct, he is just telling us that he does not need to allow his malady to consume him and his obligations. He can still live a normal life and have a simple routine.
The optimistic attitude by Kareem to his disease is really encouraging. Instead of calling for a time-out or quitting on the game and drown himself in self-pity and hopelessness, the NBA prided sportsman is bravely facing his opponent with all his might knowing that victory is so possible to achieve even during the last few minutes of the game.
Certainly, battling poor health or adverse illness is a difficult challenge for us to face. But we must have the audacity to face problems. It will make a vast difference–not just to the life of the person with disease but also to the people around us.
Lets just not forget that what truly matters in the end is not about a person’s defeat or triumph; what matter is how he fought for a wonderful life. It is true, this reflection is implied by one of the popular quotes, but we must learn to take it into our heart.
